This is a painting overlooking Rodman's Hollow, Block Island, one of the artist's favorite places to paint.

Cynthia whalen Nelson is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, and her paintings primarliy depict land that is open-spaced and pastoral. She starts with a fleshy, warm-toned underpainting, and finishes with thin layers of color. This technique lends itself to evoking the spirit of the land, as if it's telling a story. Cynthia works mainly in oil and pastel, and uses plaster in her 3D works.
