Description

"Ships at Sea", a series of Old American Shipping prints on bone china plates. Four/set, two each of dinner plates of the ships, Monk and Essex of Salem, Massachusetts. Original prints are in the Peabody Essex Museum.

Plates are packed in attractive box. Plates are dishwasher safe, but not microwavable.

The bone china plates in this series are based on prints of sailing vessels that plied the seas to and from America around the globe in days long gone by. The original prints are in the Peabody Essex Museum, which was founded in 1799 by a group of captains and their supercargoes who lived in the Essex, Massachusetts area. The adventurous seafarers travelled around the world, assembling a large and unusual group of objects, which forms the basis of the museum. The flags on the rims are emblems of the twelve great shipping houses of the Essex area; additional roundels symbolize the compasses and anchors so critical to the sailing life. China itself is considered just as collectible today as it was in the 17th through 19th century.
