Markey's work combines the visual and the conceptual and often speaks about hope, humor and the human condition.

Grey Door is part of a series Markey did of street images in New York City in 1997-1998. His subject matter was mostly things that one would ordinarily walk by without noticing, but by focusing on some small quirky detail, he found some beautiful sources for his series. In his paintings, Markey works with layers of intense color, creating a deep--almost primeval--feeling of space.
