Musical Chair - "Bull Headed Lyre Chair"

Item Number: 180
Time Left: CLOSED

Description
Davin Sokup is an Art History major at the University of Vermont. This design was donated as an assignment in a beginning sculpture class taught by Vermont sculptor Kathleen Schneider.
This chair is a representation of the first known musical instrument. The bull headed lyre was a harp-like instrument developed in Sumer, modern day Iraq. The panels on the seat and on three panels below it depict the standard of Ur, another artifact from ancient Sumer that has helped give a good impression of what ancient Sumer was like. The bull head at the top right corner and the "strings" to its left are depictions of the lyre itself. This chair shows the history of music from its beginnings over 3,000 years ago.
