Description

Is Harry Potter's Invisibilty Cloak a fantasy?  Professor Xiang Zhang's research lab at Cal is making a recipe for it!

  • Professor Xiang Zhang will provide lunch at a pizza shop next to the lab building

  • An exciting tour of Xiang Zhangs research lab (xlab) showing what's making their invisibility breakthrough possible and his students will make vivid lab demonstrations

  • A one-day Berkeley Campus parking pass.

Alamo School parent, Professor Xiang Zhang and his scientists at UC Berkeley have taken a major step toward making Harry Potter's disguise of choice a reality. They've engineered two new materials — one using a fishnet of metal layers, the other using tiny silver wires — that neither absorb nor reflect light, causing it instead to bend backward. The principle at work is refraction, which is what makes a straw appear bent in a glass of water.

TIME magazine named his work as one of top 10 Scientific Discoveries of 2008. http://www.time.com/time/specials/2008/top10/article/0,30583,1855948_1863947_1863931,00.html
