2nd Grade Class Project

Description
The second grade curriculum includes the study of “Famous Americans”, a popular unit in which students learn how certain individuals worked hard and overcame odds to achieve greatness. Our art project celebrates those inspirational stories and the potential for such achievement in all the students.
Each beautifully mounted, framed work of art contains 24 self-portraits. (22 second-graders, and yes, even the teachers got into the spirit!) The portraits were painted in acrylics, and the students were given free reign to express their own individual personality and style. The background is a painting by another famous American, Jasper Johns, with the color digitally muted. (Sorry, Jasper! We wanted to kids' paintings to pop!) Each work is framed without glass, in a “shadowbox” style for maximum visual impact.
