The Rep performance space and offices are in what was once the warehouse for the Portsmouth Brewing Company. They boasted products of "pronounced purity, freedom from adulterants and contaminating ingredients, and having a high percentage of nourishing properties." The warehouse contained brewing equipment as late as the 1970's.

Meanwhile, just up Bow Street and around the corner on Ceres, a fledgling professional theatre company was operating out of a storefront. Theatre By The Sea was having success in its 90 seat house, but yearned for a bigger space and in 1979 moved into the newly renovated Bow Street Theatre.

In the mid- 1980's Portsmouth Academy for the Performing Arts (PAPA) was operating a successful program of theatre classes and weekend performances nearby at the Button Factory on Islington. When Theatre By The Sea ceased doing business, PAPA moved into the Bow Street Theater and Seacoast Repertory Theatre was born in 1988.

Since that time, the Rep has produced over 300 mainstage shows and youth productions. Continuing its exemplary outreach work, the Rep yearly provides hundreds of area youth with the opportunity to develop positive life skills through theatre classes and workshops. In 1999, the Rep began its unique Senior Moments program, affording senior citizens an opportunity to explore and express their creativity and imagination through the creation and performance of original plays of and about their lives and experiences, for an audience of other seniors throughout New England with little or no access to arts programming.
