Artist: Mark Davis

Inspiration: My inspiration for this constructed/deconstructed violin is, as always, my mother. She was an amazing musician. Her passion for music and art, and its effect on the soul has been imbedded in me and my work is always dedicated to her. This violin construction was to glorify the elusive nature of music. Enfolded in gold wings, it is lifting away from the earth to the heavens. The face was meant as a nod to Giacommetti, both elegant and distant.

BIO: When Davis was 14 yrs old, he was profoundly moved by a book on Alexander Calder.  The discovery of these fresh, bold compositions in space was to influence him for many, many years to come. By the time he was 30, Mark had begun a career in the new sculptural jewelry field in New York City.  During this time he was still making mobiles, slowly finding his way to an identity of his own.  After many years of working in a medium, Davis began to have an intuitive understanding of his craft - his own personal language.  Each piece starts with an inspiration: a glimpse of an idea, a gesture, a landscape, a composition.  From there, that image must be constantly referenced as the long process of constructing the piece continues.  The finished piece then has had a life of its own:  a beginning, middle, and an end, which are the culmination of the original thought and the process that makes it come to life. Mark’s works can be found in numerous elite private collections throughout the US and Europe. His work is represented by and can be seen at Pucker Gallery, Newbury Street, Boston.
