Description
This beautifully matted Frank Sinatra collage features the May 13, 2008 Frank Sinatra First Day Cover, issued by the U.S. Postal Service for stamp collectors and enthusiasts.
What is a "first day cover?" A First Day Cover is an envelope, card, or other piece of paper that has an authorized USPS cancel applied to the stamp on the First Day of Issue by the US Postal Service. New stamps issued by the USPS are usually offered for sale in a single city on the First Day of Issue, and then are made available for sale throughout the country after the First Day.
The Frank Sinatra First Day Cover was issued in New York City's Gotham Hall on May 13, 2008. Members of the Sinatra family accompanied Postal Service Board of Governors Chairman Alan Kessler and Rep. Jose E. Serrano (D-NY) in dedicating the stamp during a 10 am first-day-of-issue ceremony. "Our father loved this country," said the Sinatra family, represented by Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina Sinatra. "This would have been one of his happiest days."
The Frank Sinatra First Day Cover includes a "cachet," which is a commemorative design stamped on the envelope to mark the postal or philatelic event. Prior to the 1930s, most First Day Covers were on plain envelopes, but since then the majority of First Day Covers have cachets applied to them.
A perfect gift for the Frank Sinatra fan in your family, or for any serious stamp collector!
