School History

Scottsdale Martial Arts Center, Inc., was started in 1976 under the name of Arizona Wado Karate. The school was originally located in Mesa and was owned and operated by Sensei Marlon Moore. In the mid 80's Marlon Moore came down with an illness and turned over operations to his senior student, Ray Hughes. Ray Hughes started a second school in the Scottsdale Airpark area in 1986 and operated both programs for a short time until Sensei Moore returned.

The name of Ray Hughes' school was changed to its present name in 1993 to reflect a change in the school's direction. The school changed from a Karate-only club to a multiple art facility. This change allowed the Center to expand its services, allowing more people of every age and level of experience the opportunity to explore the modern benefits of the martial arts.

Special Instructions

Discovery Series

What is the "Discovery Series"?

The "Discovery Series" is a program that allows children and their parents an opportunity to see and experience how the martial arts enhances the lives of its students both physically and mentally. Parents and their children will see first hand how quality instructors, curriculum, structure and humor start the process of growth in the development of self-esteem, discipline, confidence and concentration. In addition, parents will see how martial arts techniques and drills improve coordination, balance, agility and speed. When both the mental and physical side of a student develop simultaneously, it is then that the student becomes empowered to fulfill their dreams and potential!

Programs Offered and Target Age Groups

Introductory through Novice Karate Programs are offered for the following age groups:
  4-6 year olds
  7-12 year olds
The Scottsdale Martial Arts community inspires all students to be passionate learners and empowers them to fulfill their dreams.

Chief Instructor and Staff

The chief instructor and owner of Scottsdale Martial Arts Center is Ray Hughes. Sensei (pronounced "sen-say") Ray's passion is teaching children. With over 30 years experience doing so, his staff has been carefully selected and groomed. Staff members have both technical karate knowledge and the special techniques needed to develop discipline, manners, self-esteem and confidence in children. Sensei Ray is a 6th degree black belt. In addition to his numerous local and regional championships, he is also a two-time national champion and has competed on five USA karate teams, two of which won gold medals.

Parental Involvement

It is common for karate programs not to allow parents to observe the class. This is primarily because of potential distraction to the children. We, however, recommend parent involvement in this program. We feel that it is very important for children to know that their parents are interested in their development. However, we must have silence! We have a playroom for siblings, and parents are asked to keep occasional conversations to a whisper.

Will Karate Make My Child Aggressive And Want To Fight?

NO! Just the opposite. Aggressiveness and the desire to fight are the products of lack of discipline. Karate will teach your child self-discipline. In addition, we have very strict rules regarding violent behaviors and the general conduct of students outside the program.

Children in the Discovery Series may enroll in one class per week, however, to maximize learning potential, twice a week is recommended. At the Master Level, two classes per week is required.
