My clients are usually excited when I recommend a redesign. Redesign can be completed inexpensively and in a relatively short period of time. I have explained that we are going to take some or all of their furniture and accessories and repurpose them, mix them with new items, and maybe move them from room to room. The first thing out of their mouth is "I don’t know how you are going to do this. I don’t think you can make anything wonderful from my mix of furniture and accessories". You may need to add a few items and look at your things with an open mind, but you would be surprised at what you have and how many times you will see the same color repeated again and again in your pieces. You will realize that the items you picked, or inherited, and at some point you really liked can be brought together with common colors and theme with importance on placement and groupings. You really can put those furniture pieces and accessories together to create an interesting and eclectic environment.

If we look honestly at ourselves and society as a whole, we realize that we have become a society that buys and buys with abandon and also throws away items with equal abandon. We keep buying things we don’t need and have closets full of things we haven’t used. The number of self-storage units in the United States has skyrocketed from 6,600 units in 1984 to 52,758 at the end of 2007. That is an increase of 79.9%. Units are filled with things that won’t fit in our houses and we probably don’t actually need. We are paying money every month to keep things that will no longer fit in our house. Let’s stop to take a look at using what we already have and determine how and if we can use these pieces. Determine which pieces have meaning to our lives, and make sure we include those pieces, while pieces without a suitable reason or purpose are rmoved from the environment.

Hiring an Interior Designer is a great idea if you are starting from scratch, have been born with no design gene, or have lots of extra cash. Whether you decide to hire a redesigner to work with your furniture and accessories or buy my E-book (available March, 2009) YES YOU CAN REDESIGN YOUR HOME AND DO IT YOURSELF, a redesign can do wonders for putting new energy and life into your home. Small changes can be made quickly and inexpensively when you define your design direction, choose your favorite pieces, and make it all flow together. Your home will reflect your personality and functionality for you and your family. With the current design trend leaning towards neutrals with lots of pops of color and lots of mix in style, sticking firmly to a particular style or “theme” or creating “catalog rooms” as I like to call them, look dull and boring and do nothing to reflect the personality of people who live there.

Redesign can be done for one room or, as is my preference, you can do your entire house in stages and when combining redesign with Feng Shui principals, or by downloading my Feng Shui E-book, the results can be dramatic and can change the flow of energy to an immediate feeling of comfort and relaxation.

Don’t put off starting; make the changes now to reward yourself and those you love with a home worthy of spending those special moments in.
