About the Class: Students in the 6th Grade Civics Academy have a strong desire to create changes that are needed in the world. They strive to influence those around them by setting a standard of model citizenship. The program prepares students to develop critical thinking skills and find their own voice. Fundraising efforts enable students to work on a variety of projects and community service activities. For example, students recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for the presidential inauguration and participated in a municipal informational meeting on environmental responsibility. Each student is currently creating a Community Activism Storybook Project where they are trying to make a lasting change for the better within their community. Possible events for the future include visiting senior citizens and volunteering at an animal shelter.
Ms. McGuckin joined the Millikan Civics Academy in the fall of 2008 and claims that she has never enjoyed another teaching experience more. You can read more about Ms. McGuckin on the Millikan website (click on the link below)
