Description

Frank Pollara's (1913 - 2006) brightly colored, naïve style only masks for a moment the true subject of his tapestry-like paintings: the murder of the nuns in El Salvador Driving out the gorillas, and the suffering of the poor in Trickling Down. Pollara, a retired union executive, began painting seriously at about 1981. He took up art late in life and his colorful and imaginative paintings of urban play and violence have the demonic energy and the dense composition of the true naïve. Yellow Power is a contemporary oil on canvas about a young woman sitting on her knees, surrounded by a shell of gray. It is unframed and measures 30" x 44 1/2".
