Description
Madison, Wisconsin — people know it and love it as one of the most livable cities in America. It’s also been called one of the best cities, the healthiest city in America, home to one of the world’s ten best public spaces (the Capitol Square), and the #1 college sports town in America.
It’s been home to a diverse cast of well-known individuals, from John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and Frank Lloyd Wright to Thornton Wilder, Chris Farley, and the Zucker Brothers.
This book of photographs by Zane Williams takes the viewer on a stroll through the heart of the city, around the Capitol Square and down renowned State Street, with stops at some of the most recent additions to the city’s skyline, including the Monona Terrace Convention Center (original design by Frank Lloyd Wright) and the Overture Center for the Arts. Then it’s on toward the University of Wisconsin campus and the Memorial Union Terrace, one of the city’s best-known spots for students and locals to meet, eat, listen to live music, and generally hang out. The tour encompasses the city’s diverse cultures, including sports, the arts, and a Saturday visit to the Dane County Farmers’ Market on the Square. The visual journey finishes, appropriately, with visits to the parks and gardens for which Madison is becoming recognized.
MADISON follows two other photography books by Zane Williams. Wisconsin, a full-color photography book portraying the land, people, and culture of the state, was chosen as the official book for Wisconsin’s Sesquicentennial in 1998. Doubletake — A Rephotographic Survey of Madison, Wisconsin, was published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2003.
Zane Williams lives with his wife Mary in the historic heart of downtown Madison, a few blocks from the Capitol Square.
