Item Number: 14-15
Time Left: CLOSED

Description
This "Polage" or "polarized light collage", titled "Spreading Your Wings" is a kinetically changing original artwork created by internationally known artist Austine Wood Comarow. The work depicts a Monarch butterfly alighting on three Black-eyed Susans and appearing to slowly flap her wings. This piece was created by cutting hundreds of tiny pieces of clear, colorless cellulose and laminating them onto polarizing filters. Like a prism, the colors come from refraction of white light, breaking it into its component colors. A rotating filter behind the art, inside the light box, causes the colors to change continually. A book about Austine written by former Las Vegas Art Museum curator Dr. James Mann is also included.

A retrospective showing of Austine's lifetime work in this original art form will be held at Smithsonian Institution affiliate Lakeview museum of Arts & Sciences in Peoria, Illinois March 27 through June 7.
