This item is a one-hour consultation about an infant or child-related issue, such as discipline, school-readiness, sleeping, toileting or any other parent/child related issue. After the initial one-hour consultation, a follow-up visit will be offered. This is a chance to ask questions and to speak openly and freely with a trained and licensed child psychologist.

This consultation is not intended to be therapeutic or for treatment—it is an opportunity to discuss issues that may be on your mind, as parents. If a desire for treatment for parents, family or a child is a topic of inquiry, Dr. Alter can advise or refer, as appropriate.

Dr. Alter has been in practice 9 years, is licensed in New York State and, in addition to a Ph.D, has   completed post-graduate study, with intensive supervision, in child/adolescent psychotherapy and in psychotherapy with parent-infant pairs.

Dr. Alter is a volunteer therapist with The Fostering Connection, an organization that provides free long-term psychotherapy for children and adolescents in the foster-care system.

Dr. Alter's comment about her approach to therapeutic treatment:

I don't believe in ten-session "cures." What I do believe is that real change requires work, commitment, and patience—and that goes for both client and therapist. Whatever it is that has you feeling stuck, dissatisfied, or unhappy, we can work together not only to discover the source of those feelings but also to develop new approaches to living that will lead to a more gratifying and productive existence.

I have had advanced training in psychoanalytic work with adults, children/adolescents, and parent-infant pairs. I continue to study and learn in both formal and informal settings, as well as to learn each day from my clients, as we collaborate to create their individual treatments together.”
