Noted in mariner's logs as far back as 1772, the quiet, idyllic island of Duck Key was passed between Spanish adventurers, shipwreck-salvagers and salt-makers for a century before Henry Flagler's railroad linked it to the mainland in 1904. Fifty years later, mining baron Brian Newkirk took the island in a round of golf – sight unseen – and developed a small, idyllic resort marked by tropical gardens. Since hosting President Truman in 1963, Hawks Cay has grown into the spectacular island escape it is today.
