The Green Parakeets children learned about family and about their families’ origins. They learned that people came to the United States from all over the world. Sometimes it was their great-grandparents or grandparents who made the trip. Sometimes it was their own parents who were born in other countries, but decided to make New York their new home. Often, their families came from several different countries, which made it difficult to pick only one country to represent each child for this project.

But the result was worth the effort: Each child created a paper doll in their own image, completed with the flag of the country his/her family originally came from. The children put a lot of thought into the creation of these dolls, choosing the skin tone, hair, clothes. The result is a colorful and inspiring poster, which represents the wonderful diversity of this class.
