Suzanne Gordon, author, lecturer, patient advocate.

For the past two years, Suzanne Gordon has worked with award winning photographer Earl Dotter to visually document nurses’ work. Their first exhibit of nurses’ work was mounted at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). For three weeks, before, during and after Nurses Week of 2005, an exhibit of 110 photographs–entitled “Just a Nurse” – was displayed in the hospital’s main entrance. Over 70,000 people viewed the exhibit and it was reviewed in the Philadelphia Inquirer and stories on it appeared on a number of local television stations.

In January of 2009, Dotter and Gordon launched their calendar depicting nurses’ work, entitled “Nursing the Mind at Work.” Each month is devoted to a nurse from different setting. The nurse is quoted below the photograph explaining what she is doing and why she is doing it. As the back cover copy explains, “ Nursing is often described as the heart of health care. In talking about their work nurses often focus on their caring and compassion. What’s too often left out is that nursing – all of it, particularly nurses’ emotional work – is a complex cognitive activity. When a nurse puts education into practice, it is not the heart but the mind that is at work. The photos in this calendar and the quotes that accompany them illustrate what it means when the nursing mind is at work. These photos were taken by Earl Dotter and the text is by Suzanne Gordon interviewed the nurses portrayed here. The term the Mind at Work is taken from the title of Mike Rose’s excellent book on thought in action at work. “
Dotter and Gordon will be producing annual Mind at Work calendars and are working with hospitals to replace traditional images of nurses –images that emphasize their virtues – with photographs that illuminate their knowledge and skill. These photographs and any accompanying text can be used in photo exhibits, hospital publicity, and promotion, and calendars devoted to the work of nurses at individual institutions.
