Description

A special trip that includes roundtrip economy class airfare for two to Washington, DC as well as two nights' accommodations at the historic Churchill Hotel, a private premium tour for two of President Lincoln's Cottage, and a $100 transportation allowance, organized by Unico, Inc.  Explore the rich history of our nation's capital with a tour of Lincoln's country home and workplace where he spent a quarter of his presidency.

The Churchill Hotel, a member of the Historic Hotels of America, is located in trendy and fashionable Dupont Circle, blocks from the Metro.  Originally designed as a luxury apartment building over 100 years ago, the hotel promised “every convenience of a modern hotel with the restful quietude and exclusiveness of a private residence.” The Churchill Hotel has just undergone renovations to maintain the beauty of its upscale, pristine design and gorgeous chandeliers. Now a full-service hotel, the property offers the comfort of a ritzy home and almost every service you can imagine.  Guests and temporary residents have included diplomats, dignitaries, politicians, business travelers and prominent families. Visitors are attracted by the Churchill Hotel’s location on Embassy Row and its proximity to popular Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan dining and cultural attractions. Not only is the hotel rich in heritage, but the Dupont Circle neighborhood itself is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. No matter how guests wish to spend their downtime, they will find a restaurant, café or club nearby at which to relax or let loose.

President Lincoln's Cottage: Your premium tour includes a private visit with a personal welcome by the Director, a guided tour of the Cottage and self-guided exploration of the exhibits in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center, and a post tour visit with the Curator to examine an object from the collection. ---  About the site: After the heartbreaking death of his son Willie, Abraham Lincoln and his family fled the gloom that hung over the White House, moving into a cottage at the Soldiers' Home, a residence for disabled veterans.  President Lincoln lived for a quarter of his presidency at the Soldiers' Home and for nearly half of the critical year of 1862, connecting this "summer White House" to key wartime developments, the firing of McClellan, the evolution of Lincoln's "Father Abraham" image, the election of 1864, and the assassination conspiracy.  Here Lincoln complained to his closet aides, recited poetry to his friends, reconnected with his wife and family, conducted secret meetings with his political enemies, and narrowly avoided assassination.  President Lincoln's Cottage is owned by the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
