Description
2000 - Chateau Lascombes - $80
The first superb Lascombes in nearly 35 years, this generous, deep ruby/purple-colored 2000 offers plenty of perfumed, smoky licorice, black currant, and cherry fruit in a medium-bodied, long, concentrated style with no hard edges. While it possesses a more muscular, tannic character than the 2001, it is clearly the finest wine made at this estate since their classic 1966 and 1970. 90 points - Robert Parker.
Plenty of blackberry and currants, with hints of vanilla. Medium-bodied, with lovely, finely knit tannins and a long, berry and vanilla aftertaste. 89 points - Wine Spectator
Black fruit, dense and opulent. Plums. Rich concentrated sweet fruits, has intensity, a lot of oak, discreet power, built to last. Good length. Drink 10+ years. 4 Stars - Decanter
2000 Château Lagrange $100
This vintage owes its richness to the "great" Cabernets (76% of the blend). The color is dense and deep, very purple. The very complex nose marries finesse and mature fruit without heaviness. In the mouth, this balance is very elegant, longer than thick, harmonious, with racy, lasting tannins. This is a long-keeping wine.
"No Petit Verdot required for the millennial Lagrange: a relatively high 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot. The nose takes a long time to get going, but it is certainly worth the wait. Very fine tannins, superb concentration but tightly wound. Blackberry, raspberry, graphite and briary. Good definition on the finish, good length. Need to wait for this one. Tasted September 2008." - 94 out of 100 Neal Martin, Wine Journal
An impressive performance by Lagrange, the 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color with obvious notes of melted licorice, creme de cassis, and toasty new oak. This ripe, dense, full-bodied St.-Julien is chewy, thick, high in tannin, large-bodied, and impressively long and dense. As always, it is less expressive than some of its peers, but it is loaded as well as reasonably priced. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. Score: 93 — Robert Parker
Extremely well-done. Beautifully aromatic, with coffee, cedar and blackberries on the nose. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a mineral, blackberry aftertaste with medium fine tannins. I haven't had a Lagrange of this quality in years. Best after 2010. 25,000 cases made. Score: 93 — James Suckling, Wine Spectator
'Hefty new oak nose, plums, cassis and a touch tarry, even jammy. Very rich and concentrated, sumptuous, super ripe, superb fruit and just enough acidity. Powerful tannins. Very good length... 5 Stars - Decanter
