This 1995 Smith Haut Lafite brings out the auteur in the afficionado; look at one review of this most excellent wine (Robert Parker rating 90, Wine Spectator rating 90):

Dark plummy fruit on the nose lurking quietly behind a dense cover of leather and soy aromas, mixed in with whiffs of damp tobacco leaf. The palate was surprisingly sprightly for a wine with such a savoury, brooding nose, with a good burst of freshness right at the front of the mouth and the tip of the tongue. Fruit flavours come next, dark cherries and blueberries, intermingled with savoury-sweet soy and a touch of brettiness. Unfolding spice notes, slightly anise, follow in the midpalate, and then a long satisfying finish.
