Description

1997 Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala

The Barolo ?Cicala? is considered to be Aldo Conterno?s most age-worthy offering. Upon release, the Barolo ?Cicala? invariably proffers the most tannic of the crus, rendering its name, which means ?balm cricket,? somewhat ironic. Yet, for the collector of patience, waiting for 'Cicala' provides a revelation of what some regard as the most genuine expression of Nebbiolo in the Conterno portfolio.

The Nebbiolo is sourced from the Bricco Cicala vineyard situated in Monforte d?Alba. The vines are planted on concave slopes that range in aspect from southeast to southwest and are sheltered from hazardous winds. Vines benefit here from a clay-based soil that offers lime and calcium carbonate, generating a bolder, age-worthy wine that is tempered by blending with the grapes from the Colonnello and Romirasco sites.

The result is a wine with the balance and refinement of those from the Barolo subzone combined with the weight and structure of wines from Serralunga d?Alba. Barolo ?Cicala? is marked by a varietal bouquet of roses, tar, minerals, cherries, and lead. The richly textured palate delivers concentrated forest fruit, while layers of mineral, licorice, and smoke add additional complexity. The finish offers satisfying persistence.
