Description

No one can predict the future, but it seemed Johnny Bench was destined for greatness. He won all-state honors in baseball as a high school player and in his first full season (1968) he earned National League Rookie of the Year honors. As one of the leaders of the "Big Red Machine" teams of the 1970s, Bench was an outstanding, durable, defensive catcher and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves. He was equally impressive with a bat, belting 389 home runs. A complete player, Bench earned two MVP awards.
The winningest lefthanded pitcher of all time, and possibly the best as well, Warren Spahn was a complete player who helped himself at bat and in the field. He was the mainstay of the Milwaukee Braves' pitching staff for two decades. Spahn won 20 games a ML record-tying 13 times, pitched two no-hitters, and led the NL in strikeouts four consecutive years. He had a deceptive pickoff move to first base, and teammate Johnny Sain called him "one of the smartest men ever to play the game." Elected to Hall of Fame in 1973.
