Description

Twin Hills 8th Grade Class Project
This awesome art sculpture is courtesy of the 2009 Graduating Class of Twin Hills! It rises 8' high and with the exception of the aluminum squares it is made of salvaged metals. 8th graders are pretty cool people, but once they got started even they couldn't help but have fun doing this project.

The process:
Hammer on metal during classtime? What kid could resist that? After whacking, walloping, thwacking and smacking their aluminum squares ("texturing" them that is) the kids heated their pieces with blow dryers - metal dye adheres better that way - then donned gloves and sponged on the dye. Another round with the blow dryers (we blew them both out!) and the kids were back to Ms. Fitch's Science class (who enthusiastically offered the use of her blow torch!) Three coats of laquer later and the process was done.

The idea:
Inspired by Sculputure Jam's metal fish mural over by the Community Center on Morris St and guided through the process by its kindly creator Beth Hartman.

The materials:
Salvaged metals from Ray and Bug for creating the armature. Shiny aluminum squares cut to size and de-burred by the super considerate & helpful guys at CC & M. Stainless steel and copper wiring for attaching the pieces to the frame.
