Beijing, the capital of China, is a fascinating combination of old and new worlds, a city whose illustrious history began some 500,000 years ago, yet it is also a modern marvel. You?ll begin your journey through the relics of Chinese dynasties at two of China?s most popular and historic landmarks, Tian?anmen Square and the Forbidden City. Tian?anmen Square has long been a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, and it was from the balcony of the Rostrum in 1949 where Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People?s Republic of China. Directly behind the Rostrum is the Forbidden City, which was home to 24 emperors beginning in 1420, the gates of which today lead to a fascinating display of Chinese history and Classical Chinese architecture. You?ll visit ancient structures that illustrate the artistry, dedication, culture, and history of the country, including the Great Wall, one of the wonders of the world, and the Temple of Heaven, as well as modern structures such as the National Stadium and Water Cube, which recently hosted the 2008 Olympic games.
Your next stop is in Shanghai, which used to be a seaside fishing village, and has expanded tremendously in size to make it one of today?s multi-cultural metropolises. The city features both modern and traditional Chinese features, and shows off every aspect of its unique glamour. Enjoy an afternoon visit to the Yuyuan Garden, a place of peace and comfort in the heart of bustling Shanghai, and a tour of the Jade Buddha Temple, built nearly a century ago and housing 70 monks. A must when in Shanghai is shopping along Nanjing Road, the city?s most famous shopping street that stretches 3.4 miles. A tour of the French Concession International Settlement teaches you about the European influence on this port city, and the Shanghai Museum contains the world?s best collections of Chinese art. A half-day tour to Zhujiajiao, also known as ?Pearl Stream?, brings you into a city of antiquity, leisure, and tranquility, and the performers in the multi-media theatrical spectacular show ?Era ? Intersection of Time? will stun you with their acrobatic abilities.
