When Chevy decided it was time to take off the gloves and respond to the challenge of their competitors with a new, more-ferocious-than-ever Corvette, the first thing on their list was a little history lesson.  After a little digging, the Chevy engineers came across the original Z06 concept conceived by chief engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov for the 1963 Sting Ray.  The idea of a race-ready Corvette that could be bought right off the showroom floor was exactly what they were looking for.  The original Z06 was a racers car.  Not only did it come with a high performing fuel-injected small-block V-8 with beefed up brakes and positraction, it actually did away with such things as sound deadening material to cut weight and improve performance.  The designers of the 2001 Z06 have been a little kinder to modern day drivers who expect a high performance car that is also a comfortable car.  The new Corvette has a powerful LS6 5.7-litre V-8 mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.  It also has airconditioning, a sound system and yes, just a bit of sound deadening material.  You might call it the Corvette that has it all.
