Description
A Trip into Maritime History and a rare opportunity to spend time in this private home that has been featured on HGTV and in numerous publications, including Southern Living!!!
Caswell Beach is the home of the Oak Island Lighthouse and U.S. Coast Guard Station Oak Island. At the end of Caswell Beach Road is historic Fort Caswell . It is a sea turtle sanctuary with nesting/hatching activity from late May until late September.
You and a guest will be staying in the 1889 Oak Island Life Saving Station. As with all life saving stations, this one's mission was to rescue ships run ashore. The life saving crew watched for ships in distress from the lookout tower atop the house and rescued them using surfboats that are hung in the present-day living room. Artifacts from this era are on display in the house.
The house is located on the Atlantic Ocean approximately two hundred yards from the Oak Island Lighthouse with private beach access. The floor plan of the life saving station is unchanged. Original rooms are the boat room, crew's quarters, keeper's quarters, attic and lookout tower.
Since this is a two-bedroom property, there is a limit of two adults (no pets, please). Guests will stay in the keeper's quarters, which has a view of the lighthouse and ocean. The room includes twin camp-style beds along with a full-size closet. A private, although not ensuite, full bath/shower will be available for the exclusive use of guests. The owners will, however, be on premises.
The stay will be for four days and three nights. Breakfasts and dinners -- 3 of each, including wine with dinner -- will feature low-country Carolina cuisine, such as "Frogmore Stew" and other specialties. Of course, any dietary restrictions will be taken into account. Guests will be served privately, indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather.
Should activities be desired, deep sea fishing, sailing, biplane rides, golf, lighthouse tours and other diversions are available, and the owners would be happy to assist in arranging these in advance. However, many people coming to Caswell Beach prefer to spend their time just walking or relaxing on an unspoiled, uncrowded beach.
Special Instructions
The certificate will be mailed to the winner. Please allow two to three weeks for delivery.
There is some extensive construction work in the area scheduled currently through March 2011. Certificate expires August 2011.
Gift Certificates are non-transferable and not for resale and can only be used by the person named on the certificate. Gift certificate must be used before expiration date printed on the certificate. Only original Gift Certificates are valid, no copies are accepted. You must bring the original gift certificate with you when redeeming the item/service.
Dates are optional, pending owners' availability. June through August are considered "high" season. July 4th is an especially festive time, as Southport is the home to the "official" July 4th celebration in North Carolina. Crowded, to be sure... But the location provides a great view of the fireworks without the traffic or congestion! May and September -- absent hurricanes in September -- are also good. And, indeed, so is later in the year. Walking on the beach in the fall and winter is an experience not to be missed.
