Description
Whilst Bob Oatley’s winemaking mission – “to make the highest quality wine at the best possible price” – hasn’t changed over the years, his marketing strategy has. Bob was convinced by his family and friends in the industry to name his prestige wine range after himself, Robert Oatley.
The new packaging was developed to incorporate an artistic interpretation of three rings, reflecting the family’s long-standing cattle brand.
Robert Oatley wines are built upon the Mudgee (Australia) region’s most successful varietals: Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot, combined with grapes from three premier West Australian wine regions.
Each wine is crafted to display true varietal and regional expression in a modern style, with restrained oak influence, very little sweetness and relatively low alcohol. It’s a style that’s already garnering critical acclaim: “it strikes me as refreshing,” says Wine Spectator’s Harvey Steiman.
Bob just calls them “a darn good drink!”

VINTAGE NOTES
2007 saw an earlier than normal harvest in Margaret River - as did many regions. Flavours were extremely consistent allowing plenty of blending options and gave us very typical, excellent wines that reflect the regional cabernet character. Mudgee was warm and dry, producing richly flavoured reds.
WINEMAKING NOTES
This is a tale of two wines that proved to be a match made in heaven. The Margaret River (Amadeus vineyard) Cabernet component was picked at optimum ripeness and hand sorted to remove any lesser berries. The Mudgee Merlot was from a single vineyard (Wooloomooloo), harvested at optimal flavour, seed and tannin ripeness and showing Merlot’s trademark ripe tobacco leaf character. The wines were fermented in small tanks, with 10-12 days maceration, and then pressed off skins into French oak where they underwent the secondary malolactic fermentation. They then matured for 16 months in a combination of new through to four year old French oak, at the Mudgee winery, after which they were blended ready for bottling.
