Description
French styled sheet-music cabinet with six (6) dovetail drawers was patented August 9, 1887. Stamped on the back with style #29S6, the cabinet measures 21-1/2” wide x 15” deep x 40” high. Cabinet with cabriole legs is 18th century style, gilt finishing and Ormolu accents.
The cabinet was given to the Sisters of the Holy Family by a benefactor in 1927 when the new convent in Fresno was opened.
The musician and young girl on the doors were originally thought to be too risqué to be displayed and were almost painted over.
Sister Frances Agnes (previously known as Sister Assumpta) convinced the Mother Superior at the time to put curtains over the figures. When it ultimately moved to the Armer House on the Motherhouse grounds in the late 1980s the figures were released from the “prison” of curtains to their rightful place on the front of the cabinet.
The cabinet might be nice to use as a jewelry cabinet, or a cupboard for photos or documents.
