About the Photographer Richard D. Bicknell, 1917 – 1978
Richard D. Bicknell, born 1917, was an accomplished photographer and the manager of Bicknell Photo Services for many years. He was the oldest child of Edward & Bertha Bicknell who established Bicknell Photo Services in Portland, Maine in 1919. Prior to his service in World War II as a photographer and reporter for the US Navy, Richard worked at his family’s photography business learning and honing his craft. When he returned from the war, he managed the Congress Street retail store and continued photographing his beloved Maine and participating in various art shows in the region. The hallmarks of his work are his meticulous attention to detail, the discipline and determination to get that perfect shot, his eye for composition, and the high standards he set for his work in the dark room.
Because of his painstaking record keeping, many of Richard and Bertha’s negatives have survived with detailed descriptions to this day and we are able to reproduce and show these beautiful, historic photographs of Maine.
