Description

This is a berry bowl by Rock Garden Pottery, Roger M. Galuska, of Rochester, valued at $45.

It is done in Lagoon Blue glaze, with a design adapted from the potter's Polish-American heritage.

It is all a high-fired stoneware, so it is microwave- and dishwasher-safe.

Roger etches his designs in free-hand. They are adapted from Polish wood carvings done in a town called Zakopane (Zah-ko-pah-nyeh) in the Tatra Mountains of southern Poland

Zakopane happens to be near the town where Roger’s own family comes from, and that is the connection to him and his pottery.

About my pottery

Decorating with a design inspired by his Polish-American heritage, Roger M. Galuska specializes in wheel-thrown functional pottery. All his work is completely hand-thrown on a wheel. He mixes and develops all his own glazes, so his dinnerware and other food containers are safe to use. It is all a high-fired functional stoneware, so it is microwave- and dishwasher-safe. Above are 8-inch berry bowls in Oatmeal, Lagoon Blue and Shady Glen green.

Individuality in clay

Each piece is completely hand-made, so no two pieces will ever be exactly alike. Some glazes, like Mary's Mauve and Floating Blue, are more technical, so they will  have more variation in their appearance. It is a part of pottery.

About my design

Roger's design is named "Zakopane" (Zah-ko-pah-nyeh) after a small town in the Tatra Mountains of southern Poland. Its craftsmen are known for their wood carvings. He adapted his designs from those. Zakopane also is near where his own family originated. While the clay is still wet, Roger carves his designs free-hand on each piece. Later, each part of the design is carefully hand-painted with colored underglazes.
