Some Bobby Shew tidbits:

Born in Albuquerque, Bobby began playing the guitar at the age of eight and switched to the trumpet at ten.  By the time he was thirteen he was playing at local dances with a number of bands and by fifteen had put together his own group.  He spent most of his high school days playing as many as six nights a week in a dinner club, giving him an early start to his professional career.

Bobby went on to play with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the bands of Woody Herman and Buddy Rich.  After living and working in Las Vegas for several years, he made his move to Los Angeles.  He quickly found what he was looking for and in the years to come played with the groups of Art Pepper, Bud Shank and Horace Silver as well as numerous big bands such as Louie Bellson, Oliver Nelson, Benny Goodman, Maynard Ferguson and many more.

In addition to a busy performing and private teaching schedule, Bobby spends a considerable amount of time actively involved in the educational system, conducting clinics and master classes at high schools and college campuses all over the world.

Bobby Shew has since returned to live in his hometown of Albuquerque and the lucky locals have several opportunities each year to see and hear him in action.  He took over the reins of the 17-member Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra.  Under his direction, the band performs what Shew says is "extremely good and challenging music by writers from around the world, many unknown to the American jazz scene...while maintaining a connection with the great music from the history of big band music."
