Description

A hand-knotted Tibetan wool rug in a 24" square sample size from Joan Weissman Studios.

Tibetan families in Nepal continue a centuries-old tradition, specially adapted for Joan Weissman's modern designs. Master artisans hand-card, spin and dye the lanolin-rich local wool, adding silk for luminous details.  After a complex process of warping the loom, they tie rows of knots around a metal rod.  Every row of knotted loops is sliced with a blade, creating the characteristic texture of Tibetan weaving. Joan Weissman's standard rugs count 80 knot per inch, providing a refined and tightly woven structure. All the finishing, from trimming to careful washing in herbal soap is done by hand, contributing to the individuality of each Tibetan carpet.

Rugmark certified: no child labor.
