Description

Get started with or hone your mastery of the traditional New Mexican art of colcha embroidery with this wonderful selection of hand-dyed yarns and instruction booklets. Enjoy thirteen skeins of hand-spun churro yarns, many dyed with wildcrafted New Mexico plants. Each 70-yard skein will glow with the colors of time. Whether you're looking for authenticity or simply beauty, look no further -- these glorious churro wool yarns will give you both. These are colors you might have seen as a New Mexico colonist (and will still see at El Rancho de las Golondrinas Living History Museum today). Some were found pre-colonization, and others arrived when Spain, as a world power, imported dye stocks to its colonists in the New World.

But now that you have the yarns, what do you do with them? That's where the publications come in! We're including two, created by the master embroiderers of the Sandia Mountain Chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America: the Colcha Embroidery Handbook, which is a good starter handbook describing stitches, design motifs, and the like, and Santos for Embroidery: Spanish Colonial Designs. The latter publication is a 3-ring binder with text in English and Spanish, and with designs and descriptions of 20 Santos and their feast days.

All you need to add is a needle and a piece of fabric, and you're ready to go!

Learn quite a lot more about the Churro sheep the wool for this yarn comes from, their sustainable life (no mulesing, well-managed flocks in pastoral settings often with guard llamas, etc), and their traditional and current significance within Navajo philosophy on the NearSea Naturals website.
