Description
The Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, dubbed "The Belle of the Southwest" when it was built in 1882, presides regally over the Old Town Plaza. Seemingly suspended in time, Las Vegas is about the same size it was when Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders held their first reunion at the Hotel in 1899.
Las Vegas, New Mexico is not southwestern chic, it's 100% authentic. The city has more than 900 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Plaza Hotel is the crown jewel of them all. It was lovingly restored in 1982 and has become Las Vegas' premiere place to stay. While it has a 19th century Victorian atmosphere, it also provides all the 21st century amenities you would expect in a first class establishment.
There's lots to do in the Las Vegas area:
Tour Montezuma Castle, one of the most significant of all the historic buildings in New Mexico; soak in natural hot springs; climb a mountain (nearby Hermit's Peak is a wonderful day hike); go fishing in nearby Storrie Lake or Lake McAllister in the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge; windsurf, explore the Mora or the Pecos River Valley. Or do nothing at all and enjoy the peace and quiet!
