Description
Size: 18" x 24" Medium: Oil on canvas
This painting depicts the abandoned Lonsdale Drive-In once located in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Campbell demonstrates an aging, overgrown landscape which acts as a commentary on urban decay. Much like the ruins of Ancient Rome, the drive-in still has a beauty about it which Campbell has captured in warm oranges, deep reds, and luscious forest green. We view the scene through a decrepit building frame – a frame within the frame of the painting, which in turn mimics the empty film screen. Additionally, Campbell’s textured palette knife gives this desolate landscape the same treatment as any other landscape, deeming it just as worthy, if not more in its nostalgia for things past.
Peter Campbell is a cherished member, long-time auction donor, and past Trustee of the Attleboro Arts Museum. Peter is a graduate of the Vesper George School of Art in Boston.
