This black and white print of an angel figurine presents a striking image to the viewer, even somewhat haunting. Uehara’s print plays with contrasts – the focused angel in the foreground is bathed in light, while the still life images in the background are blurred and in grey shadow until they fade to pure black at the top of the picture plane. Light and central composition focuses the viewer’s eye to the innocent angel amidst the darkness which surrounds it. 

Masatomo (Tomo) Uehara has a BA from the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan and an MFA from the City College of New York as well as a two year program with a concentration in Studio and Fine Art Photography ant the Japan Photographic Academy in Tokyo. Tomo teaches photography at Queens College and The City College of the City University of New York.
