Description
Oil on canvas
In this large-scale painting, Bogart demonstrates a bold expression of abstraction. The painting plays with contrasts, as a horizontal strip of whites, blues, purples, and even bare canvas interrupts the blackness which surrounds it. The piece is also a celebration of paint, utilizing an extremely broad and evident brushstroke which often drips with its heavy application. In this way this highly abstract piece demonstrates strength in the labor put into it, as well as the boldness of the sizeable finished product.
George Bogart (1933 -2005) had a BFA from the University of Minnesota and an MFA from the University of Washington. He taught at the University of Texas for eight years and Penn State for three years, before going to the University of Oklahoma as a full professor. He was a prodigious painter and exhibited throughout the United Sates. His work is included in many collections, including the Isaac Delgado Museum in New Orleans, Illinois State University Museum, the Spencer Museum at the University of Kansas, the State of Oklahoma Art collection and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the university of Oklahoma.
