In Ms. Leeman's words:
"The Hoffer series of paintings was initiated by a request from dear friends to help celebrate their first anniversary. The series started with a reflection on marriage and continued throughout the past years as a way to connect with them from a distance. Each work is a painting layered on top of photographs. The small scale of the paintings references the intimacy of marriage.
These works took on a new life when my friend's wife was diagnosed with cancer. Their second year of marriage was blessed by the birth of their daughter and cursed through grave illness. There is a terrible powerlessness that one has when a friend is ill, but painting is a mode of expression as well as a way to vicariously connect to them and to admire the strength of their relationship amid such tremendous stress. Throughout the series, I have reexamined my emotions viewing a period normally marked by optimism and euphoria that has been marred by the potential loss of life."
