Dark and foreboding, this monotype by artist Sylvia Petrie of Peacedale, RI is aptly titled Witches' Sabbath.

Unlike a monoprint - which has an image engraved or raised on a plate - there is no image cut into a monotype plate. Instead, the color is drawn on the plate, which is smooth and nonabsorbent, then transferred to the paper. This means that every monotype is a unique work of art, and this piece certainly conveys an ominous mood!
