In addition to his private practice, he is a lecture and faculty member of the UCLA School of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics.

Dr. Barkate is a Dean?s Scholar Graduate for UCLA and a Magna Cum Laude Graduate for UCSF School of Dentistry. He then completed his orthodontic residency and earned his masters in orthodontics from the University of the Pacific.

Dr. Barkate stays current with the latest advances in technology and techniques with memberships in many professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, California Association of Orthodontists, Newport Harbor Academy of Dentistry, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society and the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, where he is also the Program Chair of Continuing Education
