Description

One-of-a-kind hand-carved verdite sculpture by Promise Dhlwayo of Zimbabwe.  As the oldest son born to poverty-sticken parents, Promise was unable to complete high school and was instead expected to find a job to help support his five other siblings and ailing father and mother.  Being directly related to famous Zimbabwe sculptor Nicholas Mukomberanwa (his great uncle) and David Mlambo (his mother's brother), Promise served as David's apprentice, helping him to collect stone and wash carved pieces.  When Promise turned 16, he started sculpting pieces in serpentine (an indigenous rock to Zimbabwe) and he has never looked back.  This piece is carved in verdite, a semi-precious stone found in Zimbabwe.

One-of-a-kind, #3748, measures 9" L x 7" H.
