Effen Vodka is a colorless brand of vodka usually associated with a light citrus and vanilla taste. Effen is 70-80 proof or 40% alcohol by volume. Effen is slang for smooth, even or balanced in the Dutch language. It is distilled in Groningen, the Netherlands from wheat, as opposed to corn, rye, grapes, potato or soy grain, by the Houghoudt Distillery in Northern Holland. It is imported to the United States by the Planet 10 Spirits located in Chicago, Illinois. Unlike most vodkas, Effen was designed specifically for the "club scene." Instead of a founder, a 120 year old vodka recipe was given to a panel of bartenders to refine it into what younger drinkers would find appealing. In addition to the taste, this panel designed the bottle for their specific use. For example, it has a rubber non-slip sleeve around the bottle for easy handling when a server's hand is wet. Furthermore, the sleeve ensures that the vodka stays colder longer by insulation.
