La Casita de Chocolate en Abiquiu.... Historic Adobe Guesthouse

Location: Abiquiu Plaza, House #6, across the street from Georgia O'Keeffe's.

Accommodations: Authentic Adobe Home 2 Bedrooms 1 Bath Sleeps 4

Hundreds of years old and lovingly restored, may possibly be the oldest home in the Pueblo of Abiquiu. Centrally located, steps away from Miss O'Keeffe's, St. Tomas Church, the Abiquiu Library, a cantina, post office, clinic, groceries, gas, galleries, coffee shops, restaurant, spirits, sacred sights and ancient ruins.

Authentic architecture. Traditional Pueblo four room house with two bedrooms and full bath. Gorgeous thick, adobe-straw plastered walls. Herringbone latilla and viga ceilings. Flagstone, brick, tile and dirt floors. Sacred, special, private with modern conveniences. Luxurious queen beds. Sumptuous bedding.

Beautifully furnished with antiques & handmade furniture in classic Territorial style. Romantic, unique, peaceful & serene. Has a Franklin "fireplace" stove in living room with gas and electric heat. Dimmers. Small washer/dryer and refrigerators. Custom draperies. Eco-friendly cleaning supplies. Gorgeous kitchen stove with “old-fashioned” appeal. Furnished and fully supplied kitchen.

Bode's General Store is downhill, one block away. The Abiquiu Inn, offering dining and a gift shop is a half mile away. Mamacita's Pizzaria is 2 miles away at the turn to El Rito. The post office is between the casita and Bode's.

Famed for its light, beauty, land formations, artists and history, Abiquiu offers a wealth of activity. Two day hikes not to be missed in Abiquiu are Sierra Blanca on the Dar al Islam Property and the Poshuouinge Ruins right off the highway. Bandelier National Monument and many Indian Pueblos along the Rio Grande are an hour away or less. The Chama River runs through Abiquiu, allowing rafting, kayaking and camping. The Abiqui Lake is ten minutes from the Casita offering swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, fishing and picnicking.

Across town is The Monastery of Christ in the Desert and Ghost Ranch, both fascinating. The fabled Georgia O’Keeffe Studio Tour which must be reserved well in advance, shows visitors the garden and peeks of her house and studio, across the street from the Casita.

The little town of El Rito with its pastoral beauty, varied artists, forest preserve, Territorial architecture and Northern New Mexico Community College is fifteen minutes away. A truly exceptional restuarant, Walter's Place, offers superb dining on weekends, only during the summer months.

Half an hour from the Casita is Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs with its legendary waters, indoor and outdoor public and private soaking tubs, swimming pool and steamed sauna. Beautiful drives, easy hikes of canyons, cliffs and landscape Miss O’Keeffe painted, are everywhere.

Harmony Farms in Abiquiu sells their organic produce Wednesdays 4:00-6:00 pm on Hwy 84, five minutes from the Casita toward the lake and at Bode's General Store.

Chaco Canyon is a two hour drive through beautiful, twisting, red earth, butte country, evergreen forests and part of the Navajo Reservation, home of Dineh. Pueblo Bonito and the different sites of Chaco are awe-inspiring and can be visited many times in one’s life, as it is a powerful, sacred spot on this earth.

Beautiful Santa Fe with its golf courses, art galleries, jewelry, museums, fine dining and shopping, music, clubs, live theatre, opera, flea market and ski area is forty-five minutes away.

Likewise, three roads lead to Taos from Abiquiu, noted for the grand pueblo of them all, the northernmost along the Rio Grande, the famous Taos Pueblo. In Taos there are more art galleries, museums, camping, golfing, fishing, local artists and their studios, live music, the Gorge Bridge, river rafting, mountain biking and hiking trails, earthships, world class skiing & boarding at Taos Ski Valley, shopping, fine dining, au natural hot springs & rich cultural heritage.

Allow yourself to step back in time, to a simpler life. Come to beautiful New Mexico, steeped in history. Feel the magic when you step through the door. Honor the sacredness of these ancient adobe walls. Visit the greatness of Abiquiu! Experience what life was like in the ancient pueblo and village of Abiquiu at La Casita de Chocolate en Abiquiu.
