Spend the first part of your trip exploring the beautiful old world capital of Lisbon, with its thousands of years of visible history and culture.  You will want to save time for relaxing and enjoying the luxurious service at your grand historic hotel with its swimming pool, sprawling grounds and views of Lisbon. 

After you experience the culture and sophistication of the capital city, you will spend a week in a comfortable two bedroom ocean-view apartment in Pedrogo, Portugal, in the heart of Portugal’s Silver Coast (the beautiful stretch of coastline between Lisbon in the south and Porto in the north).  Pedrogo is a small fishing village where fisherman still put to sea every day, selling their fresh catch on the beach directly across the street from your apartment.  Within walking distance is a bakery, several restaurants, a superb market and all the day-to-day amenities you will need. 

Pedrogo is in the heart of an unspoiled region known for extreme natural contrasts  -- dazzling mountains, gorges and coastline, where deserted beaches mix with quaint fishing villages and towns with excellent restaurants.  Inland, amid the countryside of vineyards and forests, you will find ancient fortified villages and towns with whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets. 

From Pegrogo, you can explore some of the country’s most impressive historical and religious sites.  Visit Coimbra, home to the country’s oldest university founded in 1290 and the birthplace of six kings, or, nearby Conímbriga, the largest excavated Roman settlement in Portugal.  The beautifully preserved walled city of Obidos is described as one of the most picturesque medieval cities in Europe.  The ancient city of Leira, with its 12^th century fortified castle hanging vertically above the old town, is near the magnificent gothic abbey of Bathala and the simple medieval abbey of Alcobaca with its immense church and monastery dating from 1153. 

Among the fishing villages on the coast, Peniche is a busy town where you can take a boat to visit the small rocky islands of the Berlengas, a nature preserve known for rare birds and transparent waters.  Nazaré is also worth visiting for its spectacular beach lying below deep cliffs.  There is so much to explore in this region.  Your family will remember this adventure for a lifetime!
