2004, 2005 and 2006 Starr Ranch Syrah Vertical - 3 bottles

This Syrah Vertical is from the vineyard's wine library and represents the first three years of their production of wine.

The 2004 is 100% Syrah is for the adventurous oenophile, not afraid of a few stained teeth. It’s big alright, as the opaque deep purple/blue color would suggest. Blue fruits and leather on the nose are softened by vanilla beans and violets. In the mouth the bold tannins give way to reveal plum, black tea leaf and a hint of pepper. This unctuous wine will transform a great meal into sheer nirvana. If this wine were an actor it would be Johnny Depp in Pirates Of The Caribbean.

The 2005 is a classic California Syrah with a Southern Rhone twist. Brickish red in color, smoky oak and dark plum on the nose followed by subtle spice box and bacon fat. The mouthfeel is viscous and rich with a slightly graphite finish. Quite balanced and food friendly.

The 2006 made yet. The plummy fruit is seasoned with exotic sandalwood notes and supported by an oaky vanilla finish. This wine is showing beautifully now, but will improve for 3-5 years and evolve gracefully for at least a decade.
