The Didgeridoo or Yidaki, as it is properly called in native Australia, is the world's oldest musical instrument.By examining cave artwork images of people and animals playing the "Didge", scientists have dated the instrument back between 40,000 and 100,000 years.

MORE ABOUT THE DIDGERIDOO

The Didgeridoo was born in Northern Australia, east of the city of Darwin, in an area called Arnhemland. It is used to accompany ancient stories to help bring the words to life. Some say it's the original sound effects machine.

The Didgeridoo is basicall a hollowed out tree branch, generally 4-5 ft. long, with the bottom end about as wide as the business end of a baseball bat. Traditional Didges are made from various types of Eucalyptus branches that are hollowed out by termites. After finding a branch, the instrument maker knocks on it to listen for its hollowness. Depending on what he/she hears, its decided if the branch is ready to harvest, or to simply leave it be and let the termites continue their work.

Pitz uses various natural materials to make my instruments. Some folks use plastic plumbing pipes. Many materials work as long as the dimensions are correct. The bottom or bell end is the wider, flared out end. The opposite or mouthpiece end is the more narrowed.
