More about our organization:  Project FAIR is a small non-profit in New York City that assists low-income New Yorkers seeking to resolve problems with obtaining and maintaining government benefits -- welfare, Food Stamps and Medicaid -- through an administrative "fair" hearing administered by New York State.  See www.projectfair.org.  To accomplish this mission, Project FAIR employs a portable office -- our "Legal Help Desk" -- which we set up in the state office waiting room for fair hearings during designated hours every business day.  We help thousands of clients a year obtain Fair hearing Information, Assistance and referral (the "FAIR" in Project FAIR).  Project FAIR is extraordinarily efficient.  We leverage the resources of our partner organizations -- The Legal Aid Society, New York Legal Assistance Group and Urban Justice Center -- each of which houses at least one staffperson and  provides other in-kind benefits, including the volunteer time of highly skilled legal staff. We also train additional volunteers -- often law student and lawyers from the private bar -- who also serve clients at our Legal Help Desk.  Due to the contributions of our volunteers we are able to manage with a very small staff, but in these difficult financial times we need additional support to maintain our services in the face of the ever increasing demand for help navigating a complex government safety net.
