While big bottles are most often bought for special occasions, wine collectors buy large format bottles for their age-ability. It is believed that because there is less oxygen in the bottle compared to the volume of wine contained, the wine oxidizes at a slower pace, which result in better maturation.

Another advantage in cellaring large bottles is the inherent stability to temperature change…more wine, less likely to be affected by changes in outside temperature.
